Short answer: alpaca is warmer for its weight and dries faster because it absorbs far less moisture. Merino is more elastic, easier to find, cheaper, and available in genuinely ultralight constructions. For socks worn hard in cold or damp conditions, alpaca has the edge. For lightweight everyday layers on a budget, merino usually makes more sense. Neither wins every category, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling one of them.
We make alpaca socks, so read this knowing that. We've tried to write the comparison we'd want to read before spending money — including the parts where merino comes out ahead.
The Structural Difference
Alpaca and merino behave differently because they're built differently.
Alpaca fiber is often medullated — it grows with a hollow or partially hollow core running through it. Those voids trap air inside the fiber itself, so insulation comes from the structure rather than from adding thickness. Worth an honest caveat: medullation varies by grade. Coarser alpaca is more medullated than the finest baby alpaca, so "hollow fiber" is a tendency across the fiber type, not a guarantee in every strand.
Merino grows solid, but heavily crimped. Each fiber has a tight natural wave to it. Those crimps create air pockets between fibers rather than inside them — a different route to the same goal, and it's why merino has to be knit a bit denser to hit the same warmth.
That single structural difference explains most of what follows.
Warmth
Alpaca wins on warmth-to-weight. Because insulation lives inside the fiber, an alpaca sock hits a given warmth level with less material. That matters most where volume is scarce — inside a ski boot, a steel toe, a boot that already fits. It's less relevant in a slipper.
You'll see "3x warmer than merino" thrown around by alpaca sellers, including in older versions of this page. We removed it. There is no controlled, published test supporting a clean multiplier like that, and repeating an unverifiable number doesn't help you decide anything. Alpaca is warmer for its weight. How much depends on grade, knit density and construction.
Moisture — and the Claim Most Sites Get Backwards
This is where the two genuinely diverge, and where a lot of comparisons (ours included, previously) said something wrong.
Wool absorbs a lot of water. Merino can take on close to a third of its own weight in moisture before it feels wet to the touch. This is a real, genuine advantage: it buys you hours of feeling dry while your foot is sweating, and wool is deservedly famous for staying warm when wet.
Alpaca absorbs much less. Instead of storing moisture, it passes it through and releases it. Two consequences: it dries dramatically faster, and it doesn't reach the saturation point where a sock turns into a cold wet compress.
So which is better depends entirely on the situation:
- Short exposure, moderate sweat — merino's buffer is genuinely nice. It absorbs and you never notice.
- All-day wear, heavy sweat, or repeated wetting — alpaca wins clearly. Merino's buffer is finite; once you fill it, you're wearing a wet sock for the rest of the day and it dries slowly. Alpaca never fills up in the same way.

Softness and Itch
Here's a correction to the usual sales pitch: merino is often the finer fiber. Apparel merino commonly runs 15–24 microns, with superfine grades at 15–18. Baby alpaca typically sits around 20–23 microns, with royal alpaca below 19. On micron count alone, good merino frequently beats good alpaca.
Alpaca still tends to feel smoother, for two reasons that have nothing to do with fineness:
- No lanolin. Sheep's wool carries lanolin, the natural grease in the fleece, and it's what a large share of "wool makes me itch" reactions are actually about. Alpaca has none. If wool irritates your skin, this is likely why alpaca doesn't.
- Flatter scales. The cuticle scales on alpaca sit smoother against the fiber surface, so there's less of the micro-prickle that coarser wool produces.
Verdict: merino can be finer on paper; alpaca is more comfortable for people who react to wool. If you've never had a problem with merino, you may not notice a difference at all.
Where Merino Wins Outright
Three of these are real and structural, not consolation prizes.
Elasticity
This is merino's biggest genuine advantage and it's rarely mentioned. That natural crimp gives merino real springiness — it stretches and recovers. Alpaca has much less crimp, which is why it drapes beautifully and why a 100% alpaca sock would sag off your leg. Every good alpaca sock, ours included, is knit with nylon and spandex to compensate. Merino needs less help holding its shape.
Price and availability
Merino production is vastly larger. A single sheep yields far more fleece annually than a single alpaca, and the supply chain is more mature. That shows up as lower prices, more brands, more colors, more constructions, and easier warranty and replacement. If you want four pairs today at a reasonable price, merino is the practical answer.
Ultralight constructions
The lightest technical socks on the market are merino. Alpaca can be knit light, but merino dominates the ultralight category, and for gram-counting backpackers that's decisive.
Durability
Alpaca fiber generally tests stronger in tensile strength than wool of comparable grade, and in practice alpaca socks tend to resist thinning at the heel longer. But be careful about how much weight you put on the fiber here: construction matters more than material for how long a sock lasts. A well-built merino sock with a reinforced heel and toe will outlast a cheaply knit alpaca one every time. Judge the sock, not just the fleece.
Odor
Both are naturally odor-resistant, and both crush synthetics on this. Alpaca has a modest edge, mostly downstream of the moisture behavior — odor comes from bacteria feeding on trapped moisture, and there's less trapped moisture to work with. In practice both get you two to three wears between washes. This is not the category to decide on.
What About Cashmere?
Since people compare all three: cashmere is the softest of the three and the least durable by a wide margin. It's a fiber for indoor garments — sweaters, scarves — not for socks that go inside boots. Cashmere socks exist and they feel wonderful for about a month. For anything with friction, both alpaca and merino are the better call.

Which Should You Buy
Choose alpaca if: your feet sweat heavily; you're in boots for ten-plus hours; you're cold-weather hunting, skiing or working outdoors; wool makes you itch; boot volume is tight and you need warmth without bulk; or you'd rather buy fewer, better pairs.
Choose merino if: you want lightweight socks for mild conditions; you're buying several pairs on a budget; you're an ultralight backpacker counting grams; you've worn merino for years without complaint; or you want a specific color or style that alpaca brands don't make.
Choose neither if you're about to buy cotton. That's the actual mistake most people are making, and either of these is a large upgrade over it.

Can people with wool allergies wear alpaca?
Usually. Most wool reactions are to lanolin, which alpaca doesn't contain. True fiber allergies are rarer than lanolin sensitivity, so test a pair before committing to several.
Do alpaca socks last longer than merino?

Why are alpaca socks more expensive?
